There was excitement in the air on the morning of the 25th Skate 48, held at the Kitchener Memorial Rec Complex. At 8am, teams started filing in to dressing rooms all over the complex as games began on all three rinks including the main Auditorium rink where OHL team, the Kitchener Rangers play. In total, 60 teams joined us on the day of the hockey event, filling the rinks with over 700 hockey players over the 12 hour day.
An ambitious fundraising goal of of $150,000 had been set for this, the biggest year of the event to date and once all donations had been counted, the Kitchener Grand River Rotary club had exceeded this goal, raising $152,000 in support of local Children's charities, a RECORD AMOUNT for the Skate 48 event!
A big thanks to all the players, volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event happen. We were very fortunate this year as players were able to meet some of the children and charities that they had helped in past years through their fundraising efforts.
Finally, in true tradition of our event, the on ice winners got wings and the losing teams got hotdogs. Over 500 hotdogs and 600 lbs of wings were eaten on the day of Skate 48, but thanks to these hockey players, it's the children in Waterloo Region who really win!
Here's just some of the great pics in the Skate 48 pictures galleries above.
